Dr. George E. Howard, of Athens, Georgia, age 83, died peacefully November 21, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by three daughters, Allison (Steve) Williams of Madison, Mississippi, Lindsey (Larry) Cordell of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Mandy (Jay) Froshaug of Longmont, Colorado; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Dr. Howard was a native of Oklahoma. He received a bachelor’s degree from David Lipscomb College in Nashville, a Master’s of Theology from Harding Graduate School in Memphis, and a PH.D from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.
He began his teaching career at his alma mater David Lipscomb in the Department of Religion. In the late 1960’s he and his family moved to Athens, Georgia. At that time, Dr. Howard joined the University of Georgia faculty and taught in the Classics Department. Later, he transitioned into the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He was a scholar in Greek, Hebrew, and Religious Studies. Dr. Howard authored many articles and books during his tenure as a professor at UGA and eventually became Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religion.
In his early years he enjoyed music, gardening, and the occasional “spy” novel. He found great joy in sharing his immense knowledge of the Bible with colleagues, friends, and family. He was a respected scholar around the world. He recently donated his library of scholarly works to the Campus View Church of Christ.
In his later life, George was very conscious of social responsibility and donated generously to many organizations including St. Jude Hospital, United Way and local law enforcement.
As a memorial to him, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
A memorial service for Dr. Howard will be held at a later date.
