Born in Aynor, SC, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Charles T. Hyman and Maude Richardson Hyman. She worked as a control clerk for Lufkin.
Her greatest joy in life was spending time at Emerald Isle, along with her husband, children and grandchildren. There, she would spend countless hours in the sound with them fishing for mullet and spot, clamming, and crabbing. Upon moving to Highland Hills Village later in life, she was always up for a game of “Hand and Foot” with the other residents, or putting together a good jigsaw puzzle with those who came by for a visit.
She is survived by children, James Russell Wilkes (Becky) of Watkinsville, Susan Godwin (Grover) of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Michael Wilkes (Joy) of Buford, GA; grandchildren, Chad Wilkes (Adrienne) of Buford, GA, Matthew Wilkes (Annie) of Statham, GA, Shane Godwin of Gaffney, SC, Alicia Lamb (Steven) of Lumberton, NC, Bethany Donnell (Kent) of Auckland, New Zealand, Molly Wilkes of Cary, NC and Christian Wilkes of Buford, GA; five great-grandchildren, Saylor Godwin, Peyton Wilkes, Hudson Wilkes, Maddox Wilkes and Savannah Wilkes.
A private family service, and a spreading of ashes will be held at Emerald Isle, and then Raleigh, NC where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Cary, 218 S. Academy St., Cary, NC 27511.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
