David was born to the late Charles Odis Franks and Dorothy Edith Franks in Dallas, TX on August 18, 1949. They later permanently relocated to LaFayette, Georgia where David grew up on a farm, learned the value of hard work, and developed a love for baseball. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and began his career as a high school football and baseball coach. He later obtained his Master of Education from the University of Georgia in 1980, his Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern College in 1989, and his Doctorate in Education from the University of Georgia in 1992, while working in high school administration and eventually serving as a high school principal for much of his teaching career. Once retired, David was an avid world traveler, visiting many countries over five continents.
David was blessed with a loving family. He married Laura Ann Wynens, on March 24, 1980, in Atlanta, Georgia. David helped to raise his four children with discipline and humility. He taught them the meaning of integrity and how to play various sports. He often took the family on trips to learn about different cultures and broaden perspectives. David instilled Christian values and encouraged his family to maintain a spiritual relationship with God.
David is survived by his wife, Laura; his daughters Amber McCormick (Joshua), Heather Jones (Ben), and Jennifer Franks, his son Nicholas Franks (Kristen), his grandchildren MaKayla, Daniel, Gabriella, Riley, and Harper; and his brothers Tommy, Robert (Michelle), and Chuck (Linda), his sister Helen. He is preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Bass, and his parents.
David will have a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. on October 22, at the Clemons Chapel Methodist Church in Lula, Georgia. The family requests donations to the Clemons Chapel Methodist Church, in lieu of flowers.
