West, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Washington, D.C. on March 2, 1941. He was the only child of Col. Charles West Stewart Jr. and Mildred Hoover Stewart. He attended St. Stephens in Alexandria, Virginia. West graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1963. He held a Master’s Degree from Long Island University.
West had a distinguished 28-year career as an Officer in the United States Army. He served two combat tours in Vietnam, one of which was with the US Army Special Forces (The Green Berets). During his career, he was awarded numerous medals including the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star.
West was a loving and kind husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Linda. He is survived by his two daughters, Heather Dean of Athens, Georgia and Hillary Stewart of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by Heather’s husband Alan and his granddaughter Harper. He will be greatly missed by his other family members and numerous friends. West was truly a friend to all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on January 2, 2016 at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens, Georgia. Visitation will precede the service at 1:00 P.M. on January 2, 2016 at Bernstein Funeral Home. West will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
