Dr. David Wilson Sexton, 78, died Thursday, June 25, 2015, at his home in Athens, AL. He was born in Giles County, TN, in the farmhouse homesteaded by his paternal grandmother’s Jackson family. He was graduated from Hazlewood High School in Town Creek, AL, The University of Alabama, and the UAB School of Dentistry. Dave was a Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy and was stationed in London, England, for two and one-half years. He completed his service in the Navy at Memphis’ Naval Air Station. He moved to Athens, (the town he chose and loved) in 1968, and established his dental practice that he continued until his retirement in 2007. It was his privilege and honor to serve his patients and to work with his staff.
David was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, Athens Rotary and Progress Clubs, various professional dental associations and organizations, and a volunteer at the Athens Veterans’ Museum. He was a lifelong fisherman.
David was preceded in death by this parents David Erin Sexton and Laura (Wilson) Sexton, and brother Robert Sexton.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Mary Rowe Sexton, daughters Laura (Heath) Christopher, and Kathleen (Andy) Widener. He was “Da” to grandchildren Bess and David Christopher, and Drew and Cate Widener. He is survived by brother Jerry Sexton, and sister Barbara Searcy. He enjoyed five nephews, a niece, two great-nephews, and four great-nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Athens First United Methodist on Thursday, July 2, at 3 o’clock. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 at the church.
The family thanks Hospice of Limestone County and friends who helped during Dave’s illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Limestone County, Alabama Veterans’ Museum in Athens, Big Oak Ranch, First Methodist Church of Athens, or charity of choice.
