Vera was born near St. Victor, SK and her family later moved to what remains to be the Ching Ranch near Lisieux. She was a twin and one of 11 children who grew up, as many did at the time, tending to sheep, cattle, gardens and household duties while trying to attend school. In 1951, Vera married Martin Nagel and moved to their farm near Killdeer, SK, where she was actively involved in the family’s mixed farm while also having some part time jobs and, at home, becoming a renowned cook and baker who always welcomed anyone who stopped in for coffee or, depending on the length of the visit, made them a home cooked meal.
Martin and Vera retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Assiniboia where they lived until 2016. They then moved to Saskatoon, where they continued to make many new friends and enjoy life in new ways, aging gracefully, and could be closer to more family and access required health care for both of them.
Throughout her life, Vera had many interests and enjoyed a wide variety of activities - such as dancing, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, canning preservatives and traveling to many locations including all of the Canadian provinces.
Community was important to Vera; she belonged to Killdeer and Assiniboia UCW, was a member of Assiniboia United Church pastoral charge and the Killdeer Hall Board, helped at bake sales, Killdeer Fall Suppers and other fundraising church projects.
Most of all, Vera enjoyed her family and friends; she was always there for them if they needed help. Vera always spent a portion of each day having telephone calls with family members or friends and keeping everyone updated on all of the family happenings, whether a Ching, Nagel or friend in her community. She knew everyone's birthday, date and year, anniversary dates and phone numbers by memory. If you needed any family information - you called Vera; it was important to her to never miss a birthday or anniversary. In April, she celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by almost all of her family.
