Sylvia was born in Willow Bunch on March 3, 1941. She grew up mainly on the family farm until her marriage to Henry Cote on April 18, 1961 in St. Victor where they moved to the farm near Scout Lake where they raised their family Colette, Jocelyn, Mark, David and Patrick (PJ).
She lived on the farm until a brief period in Moose Jaw and Morinville, Alberta did not feel like home, and she moved to Assiniboia. The kids still hear in their condolences that she was happy being back home and all noted how happy and content she was. She was often seen out for walks, having coffee, going out for lunch or supper. She loved making pies and other meals and was sharing her food with friends and family.
The house was always open to friends and family, and they had many social gatherings often late into the night. When it came time to feed everyone the canned pork, canned tomatoes and toast along with the good dishes would come out. It was the only time she insisted to use the good dishes until the girls had to pull them out of the cupboards to wash them once a year. If unexpected company came you can be certain she would add extra food into the pot, and they had to stay for dinner or supper. Growing up her children’s friends were always welcomed. Their parents would rather have their friends over than them travelling all over the countryside. Sylvia stayed up longer than Henry and had fun with one and all.
After the kids left home, friends and relatives continued to visit and always felt welcome to the farm. Even until shortly before her death she was reconnecting with everyone that she knew young or old. After the kids all left home, she started crocheting. She made blankets and started making them for the older grandchildren. She also got into cross stitching for a brief period but the thing she enjoyed was quilting. She would quilt anything. Sylvia had several quilts on the go and had a dedicated room for it. The kids received more placemats, bowl warmers and other things that they had to ask each other as they did not know what they used for and afraid to ask her what they were, so they did not hurt her feelings. Once the grandchildren started getting married, they either got crochet blankets or quilts depending where she was at that time with her hobby. Then great grandchildren started coming, and they all got a quilt and she also had spares in case there was another one coming soon. One tradition she carried on after Henry died was buying every great grandchild a wagon for their 1st birthday.
One thing that she did start doing a bit more was travelling. She went to Arizona, Las Vegas and Norman Wells, NWT with Henry. Henry was not a big traveller so after he died, she crossed the country to the East Coast, spent a winter in Arizona, loved the West Coast especially Victoria, Jamaica, Cuba, China and other little trips too many to mention.
