Irene Lorraine Marie McGirr, age 93, of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2023, at Assiniboia Union Hospital Long Term Care Facility, after a short battle with Covid-19. Irene was surrounded by her three loving daughters who cared for her until she took her final breath. Irene was born on April 25, 1929, one of five children born to Eugene and Alma Delorme on the family farm in St. Victor, Saskatchewan. She grew up in the area and attended school in Forget and Lafleche. Irene married Albert (Bert) McGirr on March 17, 1948, soon after Bert’s return from his service in World War II. Together they had three daughters, Diane, Shirley and Roberta (Debbie). Irene and Bert resided in Assiniboia where they lived for the remainder of their lives. While raising their daughters, Irene worked part-time in the hospitality and restaurant industry in Assiniboia. Family and friends were very important to Irene. She would frequently host dinner parties, play cards and loved listening to fiddle music. She also enjoyed dancing, doing puzzles, knitting, crocheting, playing at the casino and attending bingo at the 55 Club. Following Bert’s death in 1985, Irene met Albert Scheltgen, who became her long-time partner of over 20 years. This opened a whole new world for her as she experienced motorhome travelling and international cruises. She and Albert followed numerous local music artists and enjoyed many evenings of dancing. In their travels they met many new people and established several long-term friendships which still remain today. Irene had a real zest for life. She enjoyed playing practical jokes and always looked forward to being on the receiving end of them as well. She was open-minded and cared for others. She treated people with respect and would always go the extra mile to help a friend in need. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Irene spent the final years of her life residing at the Extended Care Facilities of the Assiniboia Union Hospital, where she enjoyed many visitations from her family and friends. The family would like to extend their thanks to the management and staff of the Extended Care Facilities for their excellent care and support while Irene resided there. She loved her nurses and always made sure to brag about the excellent care she was receiving. Irene is predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Alma Delorme and siblings, Roland Delorme, Maurice Delorme, Dorothy (Bill) Rowson and Gilbert Delorme, her husband Albert (Bert) McGirr, and his parents Albert and Daisy McGirr-Byers, step-father Art Byers, brothers-in-law Bill McGirr and Virden McGirr and a special cousin Elsie (John) Williams, long-time partner Albert Scheltgen, son-in-law Brian Goodbrand and grandson Chad Goodbrand.
