Beatrice Skundberg (nee Dowswell) was born on January 25, 1921 near Ogema, SK. She married Edwin on November 11, 1942 and they lived on the family farm at Big Beaver, SK. Beatrice passed away at the Coronach Health Centre, Coronach, SK on Sunday, April 28, 2013.
Beatrice was predeceased by her parents Albert Dowswell (1956) and Margaret (Coubrough) Dowswell (1939); her husband Edwin (1983); son-in-law Melvin Greenwood (1983); grandson Rodney Greenlee (2007); her sister Elizabeth Souther (1984), brothers Clarence (1990), Wesley (1997) and William (2005); sisters-in-law Ida Wick, Mabel Harris, Bertha Dowswell, and Myrtle Dowswell.
She is survived by her eight children: Albert – Big Beaver, SK, Margaret (Roy) Greenlee – Red Deer, AB, Garnet (Bruce) Bickner – Moose Jaw, SK, Judy Greenwood – Coronach, SK, Mary (Berend) Westendorp – Saskatoon, SK, Gordon (Theresa) – Regina, SK, Eva (Colleen) – Saskatoon, SK, Harry (Janet) – Regina, SK; 12 grandchildren: Kevin Bickner – Moose Jaw, SK, Tammy Bickner (Colin) – Moose Jaw, SK, Lynda Greenwood – Edmonton, AB, Corina (Marc) Cayer – Brandon, MB, Clinton (Andrea) Greenwood – Pilot Butte, SK, Lisa (Tadd) Childs – Peace River, AB, Tara (Leo) Sandrino - Saskatoon, SK, Mark (Jodie) Westendorp – Saskatoon, SK, Charity (Greg) Miles – Regina, SK, Amy Larson – Regina, SK, Becky (Jeremy) Innes – Regina, SK, and Ashley Skundberg (Drew) – Regina, SK. ; and 23 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Beatrice kept a diary and recorded the weather and events every day all the way back to when she was married. These journals give great insight into what it was like to live through the decades. Her interests were sewing and quilting, making a quilt for each of her children, grandchildren and some great grandchildren. She also loved to play cribbage. She was a member of the Big Muddy Drop Inn Centre and also was a volunteer tour guide for the Big Muddy tours when they started. She also knitted many afgans and crocheted beautiful doilies.
Funeral service was held on May 3, 2013 at Big Beaver Community Hall with Reverend Ian Kellogg officiating. Tributes were read by grandchildren Lynda Greenwood and Clinton Greenwood. Music selections included: ‘M.O.T.H.E.R.’, ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand’, ‘In the Garden’, and ‘Amazing Grace’. Pallbearers were Milson Harris, Claire Manske, Dwayne March, Bryce Wrolson, Ron Aust, George Bartole. Interment took place in the Buffalo Gap Cemetery. Memorials go to the Big Muddy Drop In Centre Big Beaver, SK or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Sask. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
