He was born on February 9, 1947, to Allen and Edith Cooper in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. On December 27, 1974, he married Joyce Ann Diggs. A girl from Mathews County, Virginia that he met just three months prior to saying “I do,” knowing she was “the one.” Forty-eight years later, to the day, she was holding his hand when he passed away.
He had a tough exterior that he reserved only for those who did not know him. For his family, he showed them deep love, loyalty, and protection. It was that same protective instinct and love for his country that led him to volunteer for the United States Army and fight in the Vietnam War. He believed in fighting for and protecting the things you love.
He loved nothing more than being surrounded by his entire family. Always making sure, when they left his house they did not leave empty-handed. He was always good for a laugh with his corny dad jokes and sarcasm. He was cracking jokes until the end.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, his two sons, Jeff and James Cooper of Beaverdam, daughter, Stacey Ayala of Harrisonburg; and seven grandchildren Jason, Alaina, Drayken, Jac, Easton, Cali Mae, and Madalyn Jo. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law.
A memorial service is being planned and will be held soon.
