IN THE CARE OF
Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory - Reid Chapel
Margaret Anne Knouff Schrier, of Richmond, VA died on March 5, 2023 with her family by her side.
Born on November 8, 1940 in Pittsburgh, Pa., the oldest daughter of eight children to Margaret Jane Dixon Knouff and Richard Francis Knouff. She graduated from St. Mary of the Mount, where she met and married the love of her life, James Stephen Schrier on November 4, 1961.
She is survived by her husband, their four children, Gayle Smith (Leigh), Christine Klein (David), James Schrier, Stephen Schrier (Leslie Ferree); and twelve grandchildren, Ashley DiMeola, Emily Priestley-Klein (Heather), David Klein (Lindsay), Abigail Traeger (J. Daniel); Zachary Smith (Elizabeth Dent), Peter, Stephen and Margaret Smith; J. Michael and Samuel Schrier; Mary Grayson and Richard Schrier.
"Peg" was an avid reader starting with her first job as a librarian in the Pittsburgh public library system. She transitioned to a career as wife, mother and investment banker when she moved to Virginia. She was a devout Catholic with a special fondness for her daily Mass friends at St. Ann's.
She was a renaissance individual with so many areas of interest and expertise. She was a skilled bridge player and the master of every Shanghai game. As a gifted seamstress, she designed both of her daughter's wedding dresses after years of sewing matching Easter outfits.
She and her husband loved to travel and made it a point to take their grandchildren abroad as memorable graduation gifts. Always the consummate hostess, her well-gardened front yard "café" entertained countless happy hour gatherings and there was always room for one more at the Sunday table celebration of birthdays and holidays. Though petite in stature, Peg towered over a close-knit family and a group of friends who will miss her deeply.
They will come together to celebrate her Funeral Mass on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church. A private interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery will be held for the family.
