William George Hoffman peacefully passed away at home on Saturday, May 6, 2023. He is preceded by his parents V. Manning (Buff) and Hilda H. Hoffman of Washington, DC and his brother Richard M Hoffman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karla N. Hoffman of Trier, Germany; his four children Susan H. Gallier (Bryan), Blair E. Hoffman, Scott M. Hoffman (Kathy), and William G. Hoffman, Jr. (Katherine); six grandchildren William T. Gallier, Ronnie W. Gallier (Holly), Elizabeth H. Gallier, Joseph S. Gallier, Calvin M. Hoffman and Evelyn B. Hoffman; and one great-granddaughter Savannah Rae Gallier. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Karen Hoffman and niece Holly H. McStravick. All of the greater Washington Metropolitan area. A 4th generation Washingtonian, Bill attended Horace Mann Elementary School, Sidwell Friends School (Class of 1954) and Georgetown School of Foreign Service; Bill received a honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps. Bill was a dedicated insurance man at the helm of family founded agency, Howard & Hoffman, Inc., for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD for over 70 years. Bill was a terrific athlete. He particularly enjoyed playing basketball and golf, however, his favorite was tennis. He was the number one seed at the Club in both paddle tennis and tennis. Bill loved travelling and there always was a tennis racquet in his luggage. Bill was a Trustee on many executive boards including the Fireman’s Insurance Co., Home Casualty, the National Bank of Washington, and Sibley Memorial Hospital. He was passionate about raising funds for the hospital, especially for the nurses and for the Cancer Center. Bill was charming and fun-loving with a great sense of humor. He could light up a room like no other. Bill will be greatly missed. Funeral Services through Murphy Funeral Home Arlington. Graveside service Private.
