I ran into Mr. Mattingly two years ago for the first time in 45 years when he recognized me in an elevator at Arlington Hospital.  As I  studied his name tag and wondered if he could be the kind Mr. Mattingly of my childhood, he called me by my name. He asked about my family and remembered everyone. Such a remarkable capacity for human connection is rare indeed and explains the many sweet remembrances of him posted on this site by people who knew him from their childhoods. I am deeply sorry for your family's loss.

I see this picture of Mr. Mattingly, and it makes me sad. He was a very special person, and he will be missed. My thoughts are with all of the Mattingly family. You all are so special to me.

I am so sorry to hear about Andy's Dad. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.

When it came to neighbors, we hit the jackpot having the Mattingly family just up the street. Our kids had great role models in the Mattingly kids and we, as parents, were enriched by the grace and good humor of Gene and Noreen. Gene, you will be missed.

To the Family of Gene Mattingly, I want to share some memories of uncle Gene before he had his own family. Gene accompanied our family on our summer trip to Daytona Beach when we were kids. He was like a big brother and saw to it that we had a blast behind our parents back. I will never forget those times.  Thank you, Uncle Gene. The children of Mr. Mattingly are as far as one needs to look, to see the gifts he sent out into the world. He was such a kind man. I'm so glad there are many of them to continue the way he moved in the world.

Uncle Gene and Aunt Noreen epotomize the sum of Gene's siblings, good citizens, good Christians and strong families. All things important. Uncle Gene my hero. Love Randy Mattingly and family.

It is with great sadness that I heard of Gene's passing last week.  We worked
together at Virginia Hospital Center on the Monday morning wheelchair escort service for several years.  It has been a great pleasure for me to have known Gene, laughed and told stories at the escort desk.  He is missed and my sincere condolences go to his family.  He will always be remembered as a wonderful guy.
