Ruth Elinor Lassell

Ruth Elinor (Jewett) Lassell passed away 2 months shy of her one-hundredth birthday on June 21, 2021. She was born in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts on August 22, 1921. She lived a life full of loving support to her family, her friends, and her country. She grew up involved in many activities to include dance lessons as a child, and the Glee Club and French Club in high school. Known as “Ruthie” in high school and to her husband, her yearbook quote stated: “A good disposition is more valuable than gold.” Ruth carried her good disposition throughout her life. She entered nursing school following graduation and completed her nursing education at Burbank Hospital School of Nursing in Fitchburg, MA in 1942. In 1943 Ruth married Donald L. Lassell, a high school classmate and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1943. Ruth was a Navy Wife for 24 years, caring for the household during her husband’s numerous deployments. She also hosted social gatherings, and provided support, leadership, and friendship to the other wives. She moved often during her husband’s Naval career, raising her family, and eventually settling in Olney, MD. During her life Ruth served as a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and a school volunteer. In keeping with the saying “once a nurse, always a nurse,” Ruth attended a nursing refresher course, and volunteered for the American Red Cross later in life. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family well into her 90’s where all enjoyed her great sense of humor. She demonstrated her love and devotion to both her family and friends through her unceasing kindness and generosity. She sustained her life-long friendships through the exchange of numerous cards and letters. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Donald, and her three brothers, George, Bradford, and Bruce Jewett. Ruth is survived by her three children: Don J. Lassell (and his wife Pamela), Jeffrey D. Lassell (and his wife Missy) and Diane P. Hallnor; her 9 grandchildren: Erik, Karin, David, Nathan, Daniel, Austin, William, Mary, and Michael; and 6 great grandchildren: Liam, Talon, Lilith, Kate, Benjamin, and Clara. A memorial service and burial at Arlington National Cemetery are planned several months from now (details will be announced as they are known).
