Russell Hatchl

Quentin Russell Hatchl, age 80, died peacefully at home on November 9, 2024, after a long illness. He was born in Washington DC on Sept. 13, 1944, to Quentin Roosevelt Hatchl and Dorothy Wilson Hatchl. Russ was raised in Arlington, VA, graduating from Wakefield HS, and continuing his education at The College of William & Mary until he graduated in 1966. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard and was released in 1969 in time to attend Marshall-Wythe School of Law that fall.

After law school Russ worked for the Federal Trade Commission for 8 years before hanging out his shingle in 1979. He remained in private practice, primarily in the City of Alexandria, until 2006. He then joined Legal Services of Northern Virginia until he retired in 2011.

Russ will be remembered for his life long curiosity about almost everything. He was an avid reader and loved a good discussion on just about any topic, especially with friends and family. He loved the outdoors and spent many of his younger years bike riding, kayaking, and hiking Old Rag. As he aged, he took up archery and walking. In retirement he taught archery to Wounded Warriors at Fort Belvoir, and often walked 2 hours a day along Arlington bike trails while reading a book!

Russ was a real character and has provided many stories that will be retold by our family for years. He was generous with his time, talents, and money- and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Glad, his two sons, Brian (Karen), and Adam (Cindy) and his adored grandchildren – Luke, John, Carly, and Brooke. He is also survived by his brother, Bill, of Annapolis, MD and his sister, Mary, of Austin, TX and their families.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 10am, Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the Lyon Park Community Center in Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Legal Services of Northern Virginia or Capital Caring Hospice.
