Born on July 10, 1942, in Danville, Pennsylvania, Martin led a life marked by dedication, achievement, and adventure. He served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of Captain while stationed in Germany.
Martin earned his Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. His distinguished career took him around the globe, working in Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Switzerland, and the United States. He eventually settled in the Washington DC area and headed the International Activities Office of the National Weather Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), from which he retired in 2002.
A career highlight, Martin was instrumental in establishing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for which he was honored by NOAA. He also represented the World Meteorological Organization at the United Nations in New York and served as a scientific advisor to Representative Bill Green (R-NY) and Senator John Glenn (D-OH).
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Tú Anh Bùi; his children, Debra (Ken) and David (Miho); and his grandchildren, Julia, Erin, Makani, and Kolya. He is also survived by his dear sisters, Peggy Brawley and Kitty Scholeno.
After retirement, Martin and Tú moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while maintaining a residence in Arlington, Virginia. They expanded their real estate business in Fort Lauderdale, originally started in the Washington, D.C., area. Together, they traveled extensively, exploring the world through numerous trips and cruises, and spent several months in Southeast Asia over consecutive years.
Martin's passions included hurricanes, real estate, and travel. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Murphy Funeral Homes in Arlington, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross, in Martin's memory.
