Jean Pierre Marie Graziani

Jean was born in Campitello, Corsica, France on April 16, 1924; the fourth child of Pierre Felix and Angele Marie (Mazzoni) Graziani. At an early age, he went to study for the priesthood at the diocesan minor seminary in Ajaccio, Corsica. He remained there until the end of the German and Italian occupation by the U.S. Army in 1943. Leaving the seminary, he enlisted in the Free French Army Air Force in Ajaccio, Corsica. Jean was sent to Blida, Algeria for training and later to an air base outside of Casablanca, Morocco.

From Casablanca in June 1944, he embarked on a Liberty ship bound for the United States for further training by the U.S. Army Air Force. In the U.S., he was trained as a radio/gunner and stationed at air bases in Alabama and Illinois. At the end of the war, he was sent to Bolling Field in Washington, D.C. After being demobilized in 1946, he joined the Military Mission of the French Embassy in Washington.

In 1948, because he wanted to remain in the U.S., he took a job with a friend working in ceramic construction. After learning his trade, he started his own company - French Tile and Marble Co., and continued in this occupation until his retirement.

Jean became a U.S. citizen in 1969. He was a member of the French Veterans of Washington, the Knights of Columbus, parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, and the treasurer of La Joyeuse Boule, a petanque club. Jean was an outstanding petanque (boules) player and won many trophies in national and local competitions.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary E. "Betty"; nieces, Michele Petretto (Yael), Claire Petretti Marti (Todd); niece-in-law, Petra Saline (Dale); and nephews, Robert Petretti and Derek Anderson McNeill.

Jean est né dans la ville Campitello situee en Corse (France), le 16 Avril 1924; quatrième enfant de Pierre Félix et Angèle Marie (Mazzoni) Graziani. Dans se jeunesse, il a étudié pour sa prêtrise au séminaire du diocèse mineur d'Ajaccio, une des 2 plus grandes villes de Corse. Il y étudiera jusqu'à la fin des occupations italiennes et allemandes par les troupes américaines en 1943. Quittant alors le séminaire, il s'engage dans l'armée de l'air des forces française libres, à Ajaccio. Jean a été envoyé à Blida, en Algérie, pour s'entraîner, puis dans une base aérienne à l'extérieur de Casablanca au Maroc.

Ensuite, de Casablanca, en Juin 1944, il s'embarque sur un "Liberty ship" pour une formation complémentaire aux États-Unis. Les forces aériennes américaines le spécialisent comme radio/mitrailleur et el stationnent dans des bases aériennes de l'Alabama et de l'Illinois. A la fin de la deuxième Guerre Mondiale, il est transféré à Bolling Field, Washington, DC. Démobilisé en 1946, il rejoint alors la mission militaire française située à l'Ambassade de France de Washington, DC.

En 1948, souhaitant rester aux États-Unis, il a pris un emploi avec un ami travaillant dans la construction en céramique. Après avoir appris son métier, il a créé sa propre entreprise - 'French Tile and Marble Co.', et a continué dans cette profession jusqu'à sa retraite.

Jean est devenu citoyen américain en 1969. Il était membre des vétérans français de Washington, des Chevaliers de Colomb, paroissien de l'Eglise catholique Saint Antoine de Padou et trésorier de La Joyeuse Boule, un club de pétanque. Jean était un joueur de pétanque (boules) exceptionnel et a remporté de nombreux trophées dans des compétitions nationales et locales.

Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse bien-aimée, Mary E. "Betty"; nièces, Michele Petretto (Yael), Claire Petretti Marti (Todd); belle-nièce, Petra Saline (Dale); et ses neveux, Robert Petretti et Derek Anderson McNeill.
