Born in Waterville, Maine on June 10, 1926, to George Willard and Miriam Smith Brier, he graduated from the University of South Carolina on June 5, 1946 and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served on active duty for the next 33 years. Initially serving as an infantry officer, he was designated a naval aviator in 1951. Following his retirement from the Marines in July 1976 and a few years as a defense contractor, George joined George Washington University to pursue a doctoral degree and his love of teaching.
