Douglas “Doug” Philip Welty, 62, of Arlington, VA, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021. He is survived by his partner Terry Murphy, his sister Candace (Welty) Megahan and her husband, David, of Columbia, MO, and his nephew James Megahan, of New York City.
Doug was born on April 28, 1959, in St. Louis, MO, to Dr. John and Janese (Kitchen) Welty. He graduated from Clayton High School, Clayton, MO, in 1977 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from Northwestern University in 1981. Doug’s powerful baritone voice and his passion for singing gained him admittance to New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, from which he received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. He was a solo artist for various opera companies, in off- Broadway shows and on tours. Doug’s excellent communication skills were key to his success in both the private and the public sector. He was the National Public Affairs Training Manager for FEMA for 10 years before moving to the position of Director of Public Affairs for the Office of Inspector General for the Department of State.
A visitation is planned for Sunday, October 24 and a funeral service for Monday, October 25. Details may be found at murphyfuneralhomes.com.
