In the scripture Hebrews 6, the author instructs the church on how it can demonstrate faith and reap the rewards for being obedient. Hebrews Chapter 6: 10-12, states, “For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him by caring for other believers as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true.” These verses personify the heart and soul of our beloved Doreen Yolanda Walker.
Doreen Yolanda Walker was born May 8, 1954, in Portland, Jamaica, to her parents Juliana K. Walker and Anthony D. Walker. She graduated from Port Antonio Senior High School in Portland, Jamaica. As a young adult, she worked in retail and hospitality, but she took great pride in being a caregiver to children both within and outside of her family. She loved to go to “Old Hits” reggae dance parties, where she’d drink her favorite Red Stripe beer. She enjoyed socializing, loved shopping, and loved going to the movies. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She would later become a single mother, raising her two daughters, Joan Steer and Julian Orr, before migrating to Providence, RI. She was determined to create a better quality of life for herself and them, a dream that she would later fulfill.
It is an undeniable truth that Doreen’s passion in life was to care for others, but she epitomized love-in-action, which was most clearly reflected in motherhood. She was the ultimate mother and grandmother who embodied love purely and deeply. She held firm to the example set by her own late mother, Juliana K. Walker, which was to share love freely. Doreen had a servant’s heart.
Throughout the years, Doreen grew in her faith and was baptized at The Nova Church. She understood that “our lives are not our own” and that our lives have value because God created us. She often sacrificed her time, energy, and love for others. She saw needs and did her best to meet them. She expressed compassion with her words, through her touch, and with her intentions.
Immediately upon moving to the United States, Doreen became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at the Scandinavian Home in Cranston, RI, where she served an almost 30-year term, winning many awards for exceptional care of her patients. She also garnered the love and respect of her colleagues, who kept in touch with her long after she retired.
Doreen Yolanda Walker, aged 67, of Providence, Rhode Island, departed this life to be in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. She was surrounded by her children, son-in-love and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Simmie Hall; parents Anthony and Juliana Walker; sisters Melody Walker, Florel “Dotty” Walker, Ouida Walker; and brother Linton Walker.
She leaves to cherish her legacy of faith and memories to her daughters, Joan Steer and Julian Orr; son-in-love Hugh Steer; grandchildren Ashton Taylor, Jade Taylor, Belle Steer, Grayson Steer, and Brynn Steer; God-daughter Christina Brown; her bonus grandchildren Denzel, Christiana & Christian, Caleb & Connor, and Kameron & Richard.
Siblings Beverly Hinds and brother-in-love Edmond Hinds; Lisa Walker, Angela Walker, adopted brother Miguel “Boylow” Lowe; devoted friend Rameka Blakey. Host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and special friends.
Although the future is unknown, we have access to our maker, Jesus, who is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow. We celebrate the wonderful life of Doreen and the evidence that with God, all things are possible.
BUT GOD LOVED HER BEST
by Kathryn Eddleton
We prayed for a miracle to be sent from above, in faith we asked the Lord please heal the daughter you love.
She was a faithful servant in so many ways, constantly giving thanks to God and gave him all the praise…
But God saw her failing health and knew which was best. Her condition had worsened; therefore it was time for her appointed rest.
The Lord reassured our hearts as she transitioned that day on the other side of eternity, we’ll again see her…
The life of the Butterfly, from the egg to the cocoon, does not display its hidden beauty, no, not a moment too soon.
The Butterfly goes through a life’s cycle as it makes its start, just as a believer grows spiritually and produces a transformed heart.
The transformation for a Butterfly is a miracle to behold, but God is the miracle-worker which created that change to unfold.
There are many things we can write about, but just putting a few lines on this paper just will not do.
But God knows these things and recorded each and every one. He declares of your life “My good and faithful servant, well done.”
We will genuinely miss you with each passing day. Our hearts are grieving deeply that you can no longer stay.
Jesus, our Lord and Savior, was your daily source. You have kept the faith, fought a good fight, and have finished your course.
