Claire was born 19 November 1923, in Narberth, PA, to Jesse Bowman Chesnutt and Althea Claire Dubler. Claire is the last remaining family member of her Dubler lineage. In 1925 she grew up at 2351 Riverside Drive in South Williamsport, PA and attended the local schools especially Roosevelt Middle School.
Later Claire moved to Wayne, PA after her loss of her older brother, Jesse Jr during diphtheria pandemic and her mother in a vehicle accident. In 1941 Claire graduated from Radnor High School and continued her education at a business school in Philadelphia, PA.
On the first of November 1943 she married Pfc Harold Feeney, US Army at Wayne Presbyterian Church in Wayne, PA. Her husband later joined the US Navy until his retirement in 1969. Claire travelled with him to California, Pennsylvania, Ecuador, New York, Panama, France and Virginia while raising three sons, Hal Jr, Charles and David. They finally settled in Alcove Heights neighborhood in 1959 and later divorced in 1966.
Claire continued to reside on 7th Street South in Arlington, VA and married Norman Edward German in her backyard on June 5, 1976. They celebrated 44 years as he passed away on September 10, 2020.
Her home was the central location for many family gatherings during the holidays and celebration. It was filled with love, hugs, laughers, tears, conversations, friendships, prayers, flowers, dogs, cats, music and food!!!
Claire loved to sing and play the piano, writing poetry, planting & tending her gardens, reading her Bible with Eddie and with her church group, going on date night at her favorite restaurant IHOP on Fridays, completing crossword puzzles from the Washington Post, eating desserts, walking her dogs, weekend cookouts on her deck and enjoying her summers at Chincoteague, VA.
She is survived by her two daughters-in-laws Barbara & Jennifer, six grandchildren Michael, Bryan, Chris (Elizabeth), Anne (John), John (Jess) & Daniel and thirteen great grandchildren Brittney, Jessica, Jackson (Wendy), Nathan, JohnMac, Claire, Ryan, Colin, Julia, Danny, James, Jack & Jay, two great great grandchildren Taron & Lennon. Those who called her as “Aunt Claire / Aunt Louise”, her nephews Robert, John, Dean and Joe (Janice), her great nephew Jesse, and her great niece, Caroline and her sister-in-law Bonnie Beavers and her two children, John and Barbara.
She was well-loved by her neighbors and their ‘paws’ friends of Alcova Heights and the members of Arlington Church of Christ.
Claire worked as a secretary and volunteered the women’s bible group and prayer circle at the Arlington Church of Christ where she had been a congregation member for many years and also, volunteered at the local Arlington County Animal Shelter and Meals-on-Wheels organizations. She had adopted several dogs and cats for years.
Claire was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers Jesse Jr and Cliff, her husband Eddie and her three sons, Hal Jr, Charles and David.
Claire will be buried on Monday, August 1st at 11 am at Wildwood Cemetery in Williamsport, PA.
