IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

Charlotte Jean Millar, 82, of Alexandria, VA passed away on January 22, 2021. Survivors include her sisters Darlene Rogers and Jeri Thomas of California; her children, Valerie Penney (Mike) of Arlington, VA, Jeff Millar (Colleen) of Edwards, IL, and Beth Lenz (Tom) of Vienna, VA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Charlotte, Sarah, Samantha, HT, Rachel, Ashley, and Theo, as well as a great grandchild, Paxton. Born on March 27, 1938 in Orange, California, Charlotte was raised in Anaheim and spent her adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Northern Virginia. She was a long-time member of the Washington Golf and Country Club where she was queen of the tennis courts, a regular in the fitness center, and a friend to many young and old. She volunteered her time generously throughout her life. She traveled the world and had a flair for fine wine, fine food, fine fashion, and fine jewelry. Her historic home in Old Town Alexandria was filled with cherished antiques and works of art hand-selected over the years. She was the beautiful, stylish, generous, loving matriarch of her family. She was GaGa to her grandchildren and many others. You always knew when Charlotte entered the room. She was fiercely independent and opinionated, while also compassionate, and always willing to lend a helping hand. She loved to entertain and was the consummate hostess. She will be remembered through the many traditions she started including her annual Cookie Day, homemade pies for all occasions, and an annual family trip to Kiawah Island, SC. Charlotte was also very involved with the Passion for Caring Gala and Thrift Shop (Hospice of Northern Virginia); to honor her dedication, donations can be made in her memory to Capital Caring. The family would like to extend gratitude to the staff of Virginia Hospital Center for the care shown to Charlotte over the past few years. Those wishing to share their thanks may consider donating to the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation as well. Her friends and family meant the world to her and we look forward to celebrating her life at a later date.
