Alexander John Stankus, 79, of Arlington, VA, died peacefully on Jan. 6 at Virginia Hospital Center following a series of health issues. Born on June 12, 1943, and raised in New York City, Alex was the third of four children born to Mary and Peter Stankus. He graduated from the High School of Music and Art, where he excelled in playing the French horn. He enlisted in the Army, where he served as a communications specialist with 202 Signal Corps at the Strategic Army Command at Fort Gordon, GA. After attending Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. and working 17 years for the Bendix Corporation as a telex operator, he was transferred to their office in Arlington, VA. He joined Allied Signal Corporation (now Honeywell International) in 1980 as a telecommunications specialist and worked there for 10 years. He finished his professional career as a telecommunications specialist with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, retiring in April 2017. He married the love of his life, Susan Greco, on September 26, 1981, in New Jersey. Alex was passionate about engineering marvels and life’s wonders. He was known for his great empathy, quick wit, and unconditional love for his family. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan; daughter Kristin Moriconi and her husband, Alex, of Abington, PA; and son Griffin Stankus of Rockville, MD. Alex was blessed with two grandchildren, Amelia and Luke Moriconi. He also is survived by his brother Martin of Monmouth Junction, NJ; sisters-in-law Mary Ann Orlando of Flemington, N.J., Anne-Marie Stankus of Monmouth Junction, N.J., and Tina Stankus of Nanuet, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his brothers Paul Oshipko and Peter Stankus and brothers-in-laws Patrick Orlando and Gordon Greco. A private funeral service will be scheduled at a later date.
