Susan Elizabeth Strain, beloved daughter, sister, niece, aunt, and friend, passed away
on March 28, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. She was born on May 19, 1959 in Rantoul,
Illinois, to Charles and Elaine, the youngest of four Strain daughters.
Sue spent most of her life in California before moving to Texas in the summer of 2020.
She was a standout softball player at Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, CA. She played
at the collegiate level for California Polytechnic State University from 1977-1981, where
she also graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.
Sue launched her professional career by teaching, first at Rim of the World High
School, then held head coaching positions at San Bernardino Valley College and
California State University San Bernardino. The Foothill Conference named her Softball
coach of the year in 1988–the same year she completed her Masters in Education at
Azusa Pacific University.
In 1997, Sue became a Physical Education teacher and department chair at Almeria
Middle School, in Fontana, CA. She received the faculty appreciation award in 2004,
and was named Teacher of the Year in 2003 and 2015. For 22 years, Sue devoted
herself to the Almeria students and faculty, where she made many dear friends.
Sue retired after 36 years of teaching and coaching, and moved to Texas, surrounded
by family and pets that loved her. She had a passion for animals and a particular soft
spot for cats, rescuing and caring for beloved feline family members all her life.
Sue is now reunited with her dad, Charles. She is survived by her mother, Elaine, three
sisters: Cyndi Keidel (and husband George), Cathy Bradshaw (and husband Pat), and
Charlotte Dudney (and husband Fred).
