Robert graduated from East Texas Baptist College, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Louisiana Baptist College with degrees in Religion, Biblical Studies, Childhood Education and Communications.
Robert served active duty Air Force as an RC 135 Reconnaissance Pilot, retired from Army Reserves as a helicopter test pilot and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Carrier Safety Inspector.
He has served in several churches as Children’s pastor and was currently serving as Associate Pastor of the Bar Cross Cowboy Church. Robert loved his family and was completely devoted to them. He had a heart for all children. In addition to his church work with children, he was a golf instructor with the USGTF and loved to teach. He taught in children’s golf camps and has instructed many of his adult friends.
Robert was known for making people laugh-whether it was through clowning or his corny “Robert” jokes. But most of all, he wanted everyone he knew to have the joy and peace that comes from knowing Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Allen Whitley, Jr. and Dorothy Parmer Whitley Poindexter.
He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Brenda Sheffield Whitley; sisters Janez Rainbolt and Annette Francis (Ken); daughters Angela Brantley (Jason) and Brenda Klinge (Del); son Chris Whitley (Kari); 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation is being held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 from 1:00-2:00 pm at the Bar Cross Cowboy Church, 12001 FM 917, Alvarado, TX 76009. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 2:00 pm at the Bar Cross Cowboy Church.
