ARLINGTON -- Lawrence "Larry" Charlesworth made his transition from this world on Saturday, July 4, 2015, in Fort Worth. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, godfather, brother, uncle and retired TCU professor, he will be missed by folks who knew and loved this gentle, compassionate man. Service: Will be held at a later date with full military honors.
Larry was born one autumn day in Philadelphia, Pa., to Yetta Shapiro and Edward Charlesworth. His family moved around the country a good deal while he was growing up, and at age 15 his mother signed for him to enter the Army Air Corps, where he was a bombardier who flew 35 missions over Germany in World War II.
After the war, he married, was stationed in Panama and attained the rank of sergeant before leaving the military to pioneer in developing TV stations in West Texas. Building and engineering at several stations, Larry used his honey-golden baritone voice as a disc jockey and also built Wolfgang von Dog, a creative puppet that he used to host a successful children's TV show for several years in San Angelo. Subsequently, he worked at the Fort Worth State School training staff and advocating for quality care prior to finishing his career at TCU.
We miss him, but we smile to think he is no doubt teaching and performing in heaven now totally free from the Alzheimer's disease and pain that plagued him in his last few years here on earth.
Survivors: Wife, Marilyn; children, Joanne Charlesworth, Walter "Charlie" Charlesworth and wife, Dana, Kim Holton, Dan Lieberman and wife, Holly, and Ashley Williams; sister, Susan Packard and her husband, Christopher; granddaughters, Shelby Holton, Kylie Reiffert, Daci and Dani Racher; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and godson, Trevor Kern. We trust that dogs, especially Frieda, Barclay and Dreyfus, ran to the Rainbow Bridge to greet Larry when he arrived.
