He was born on Sunday, December 2, 1951 at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Quantico, VA to Gunnery Sergeant Kermit Roosevelt Wilson USMC and Vada Vonelle Kite of Mercer, PA. He grew up in Jasper Alabama while his father continued to serve in the military. Jasper was his father’s hometown. There is a funny story behind his name: When his parents married his Mother thought that his Father’s name was Kermit Ronald Wilson and he would never tell her what his middle initial R was for. So, when Ron was born they called him Junior until his Mother found out his father’s name was Roosevelt. Ron was always telling the kids that he was the original Kermit before there was a Kermit the Frog. He was always definitely happy that he was never named Roosevelt nor called Junior anymore.
Ron attended Winston County High School where he played football. He was a BIG Alabama Crimson Tide fan. After high school he attended Walker County Jr. College and then went on to the University of Alabama.
Ron worked as a Quality Control Inspector for NASA and the Arlington ISD after moving to Texas in 1981.
Ron was passionate about fishing and woodworking. He had a great love of the outdoors where he would spend hours walking among the trees behind the family home place. We will be planting a tree in the National Forest in his memory. Ron was a long time supporter of the Running Strong for American Indian Youth organization as well as other ministries. He had a great appreciation for Southern Gospel Music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Willie and sister Gloria. He took his job of being the oldest of 5 children very seriously.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Raglin Wilson; step-son, Kevin Wayne Thomas and step-daughter Katie Elaine Thomas. Both of whom he considered his own. Granddaughter Hannah Elaine Thomas and Grandson Asher Chazon Hill (Papa’s little buddy) and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Ron’s favorite scripture: Jeremiah 17: 7&8
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
His favorite quote: “ The warrior, for us, is the one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity.” – Sitting Bull
