John was born Nov. 2, 1950, to John Garland and Ava Lindsey Mixon in Moultrie, Ga. He graduated from Mercer University in 1971 and Mercer University Law School in 1974.
On May 26, 1974, John married Penny Miller, and their journey to Arlington began. The first stop was Alexandria, Va. In the U.S. Army JAG Corps, John was an appellate attorney stationed at Baileys Crossroads, Va. During this time, John graduated from George Washington Law School with an LLM in taxation. Following military service, he began work as a trial attorney with the Department of Justice, Tax Division. John and Penny welcomed daughter Brooke in October 1979. Three months later, they arrived in Dallas, where John began work with the Dallas office of the Department of Justice. In October 1982, John and Penny welcomed their second daughter, Paige. Private practice followed, as well as a move from Dallas to Fort Worth. In July 1984, John and Penny welcomed their third daughter, Shelley. They moved to Arlington in June 1990 and finally stayed put. John formed his own law firm, John D. Mixon, P.C., in 1997 and served as counsel to Foster & Sear and Hall & Mixon law firms. Tennis provided John much joy and many happy memories, from couples' trips to Lakeway, guy trips to Newk's, to the regular Monday and Wednesday groups at TCU. John also served as captain of many USTA teams, including two this spring.
John was preceded in death by his parents and beloved daughter, Paige.
Survivors: Wife, Penny; daughters, Shelley Mixon and Brooke Mixon; son-in-law, Ronnie Hall; brother, Scott Mixon; sister, Joyce Mixon of Moultrie, Ga.; and his four-legged family, Libby, Kebi, Doc Holliday and especially Wendy.
