Elsie Nan Mezick, Nan or Grandma, as her friends and family called her, was born in the small town of Plymouth, Kansas in 1922. She grew up on a farm in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas during the dustbowl years, acquiring all of her elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse. She received her 3yr. teaching certificate from Kansas State Teacher’s College.
After marrying and moving to the Houston/Pasadena, TX. Area, Nan began to raise her daughter and 3 sons. There were frequent overnight trips to Galveston Beach with sunburns, sandy watermelon, and her delicious fried shrimp.
What a great cook she was! Money was tight, and sometimes even nonexistent, but she always made room for one or two more at the table. Coming home from school, we could smell her homemade bread, cakes, pies, & popcorn. And late night spaghetti with friends was routine.
Nan was an artist and crafter of any & all interests. She was a gifted seamstress, oil and acrylic artist, and could whip out the latest creative project by sight. She spent many hours crocheting, quilting, and painting and her family will enjoy all her endeavors for generations to come. One of her favorite hobbies was “rock hounding” and being an avid member of the Gem and Mineral Society.
Nan’s family all remember her special love of chocolate, hot tea, and a rip roaring game of Scrabble. Everyone knew she would win! She knew every word in the Scrabble Dictionary and if challenged, she always won! We always knew she would fill everyone’s tummies with all sorts of goodies and big doses of laughter and fun!
