Ms. West graduated from Little Rock Central High school in 1970. She was a part of many different clubs throughout her time in school, one of them being the Students for Black Culture. The main purpose of the club was to study Black culture and promote better relations between black and white students. The club was instrumental in getting the school to actively observe National Negro Week during the month of February.
She also attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with her Bachelors Degree. During her time in college she was a model and was in a commercial for Alaskan Fur Co. After graduation she went on to work for an advertising agency in the accounting department.
Ms. West had a vast career in many different fields. She worked for KPL Gas Company as a Meter reader and worked her way up to one of the only women foremen on the pipe fitting crew. Later in life, she went back to school to learn medical coding and billing and worked for Kansas Physicians Inc. at the Kansas University Medical Center where she excelled as head of the department.
Ms. West attended Sheffield Family Life Center in Kansas City, Mo and then later Lenexa Christian Center. She was always a devout Christian and made sure people knew that whenever she was in a conversation. One of the first questions she would ask any stranger was, “Do you know the Lord?”
Always dressed to impress, Ms. West enjoyed fashion, traveling to visit her children, grandchildren, sister, nieces, and going to lunch with her friends. In her free time, she loved gardening. Her favorite flower was the Hibiscus.
For over 20 years, Ms. West struggled with a debilitating illness that resulted in several strokes and seizures. Although her condition caused many challenges, she was the epitome of a survivor and with the help of her youngest son, Ms. West kept pushing through every obstacle.
After suffering another stroke, Ms. West transitioned to hospice care and passed away peacefully two weeks later on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Interlochen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Arlington, Texas with her youngest son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren by her side. She was preceded in death by her father, George Alford, mother, Helen Crutcher, and brother, Amos Alford.
