Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of the late William Sheehan and Helen Gaffney, Tom graduated from Worcester High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Army Air Force. Tom served as an air traffic controller from 1946-1949 and successfully guided numerous aircraft during the Berlin Airlift.
Upon his return to civilian life Tom enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa earning his BSBA in Economics. After graduating from Drake, Tom accepted a position with Zurich Insurance Company. He later worked for American Casualty Company, Crum and Foster, American States, and GATX before opening his own MGA, Thomas F. Sheehan, Inc. in 1978.
Tom received his Law degree from Indiana University in 1968. Tom funded professorships at Drake and Indiana Law School and receive the Distinguished Alumni awards for both. Tom was also an elector for the Insurance Hall of Fame. He received his CPCU designation in 1956 and his CLU designation in 1977. He was a member of the Indiana Bar, The District of Columbia Bar and the American Bar. He was a past member of the Board of Governors of Drake University. He is the author of the book; The Liabilities of Directors and Officers: with Practical Solutions for Their Discharge.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Joan Makosky Sheehan. He is survived by his daughter Michelle “Miki” Gony and her husband Michael of Richmond, Virginia. Two sons, Thomas F. Sheehan, Jr. and his wife Susan of Inverness, IL. and Terrence P. Sheehan of Texas. A sister Ann Sheehan Schmitt of Land of Lakes, FL. Seven Grandchildren, Christopher Scott Lash, Kelly Gony Jessup, Kerry Gony Leffler, Brian Sheehan, Landon Sheehan, Kathryn Sheehan Shingler, Nicolas Sheehan. Seven great grandchildren, Avery Lash, Brady Lash, Harper Jessup, Jake Jessup, London Leffler, Reed Shingler and Avery Shingler.
A private family memorial service and inurnment will be at Monticello Memorial Park in Charlotteville, VA at a later date
