Charles Roy Johnson “June” was born in Washington, DC on June 26, 1939 to Charlie Roy Johnson and Idell Johnson (nee Napier). Charles was the second child of 7 children. He attended Saint Gabriel’s Catholic School and Cardozo High School where he participated in athletics. As a child, he spent his summers working on his grandparents' farm in Virginia.
After graduating high school, Charles enlisted and served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. Thereafter, he enjoyed a career at the United States Department of Defense as a Communications Specialist. After his federal retirement, he worked for Prince George’s County Public Schools as a school bus driver.
He was married to Carolyn Johnson in March 1965 until her untimely death in 1985. From this union, they had two children Millicent Marie and Michael Anthony Johnson. In 2013, he was joined in marriage to his wife, Caroll Huntley-Johnson.
Charles was a devout Christian and attended Mass regularly. He loved going on cruises, gardening, art, going to Pow-Wows and talking on his Ham radio (N3HFO). He had many friends across the world whom he met on the radio. Charles was proud of his African American/Native American Indian (Cherokee) heritage and often made contributions to assist the Indian children's organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathleen Goosby, brothers Alvin Meads and Ronald Johnson, Carolyn Johnson, and grandson Aaron Leach.
Charles leaves to mourn many family and friends:
His wife, Caroll Johnson; daughter Millicent Edgar (Kelvin), and son Michael Johnson (Gretina); his special Aunt Constance; grandchildren Sydney Leach, Casey Leach, DeMarco Johnson and Lindsay Johnson-Postell; great-grandchildren Eryn Leach, Justus Andrews, and Major Shaw; his brother Frederick Johnson (Kathy), sisters Gwendolyn Henderson, Phyllis Johnson, and Brenda Butler (William); stepchildren Angela Tvarozek (Ondrej) and Paul Lewis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
