Dr. Laird (“Bill” to his many friends) was born September 19, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to the late William Warring Laird and Gertrude Greer Laird. He was a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School, and following completion of his medical degree and residency, moved to Charlotte where he established his plastic surgery practice and spent more than 25 years loving every minute of his work--which truly sought to improve the lives of his many patients.
Dr. Laird is survived by his daughter, Shannon Amra of Raleigh, son-in-law Raed, grandson Zeino, and granddaughter Sumaya. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Laird of London, Ontario, nephew Laird Comber of Toronto, niece Tricia Comber of Toronto, nephew Robert Laird of Lethbridge, Alberta, nephew Colin Laird of Seattle, Washington, and niece Heather Drew of London, Ontario.
Dr. Laird was preceded in death by his son, William Warring Laird, brother Robert Laird, and sister Kathy Avery.
Dr. Laird was a beloved father, proud grandfather, uncle, friend, neighbor, and surgeon. He had fidgety hands, a mischievous laugh, and a booming voice. You usually heard him before you saw him. He loved his family and marveled over his grandchildren. After an incredible medical career and a lifelong love affair with golf, Dr. Laird had in recent years slowed down and learned to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. He loved good food, World War II movies, and was always an avid student of history. He also loved watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights and debating politics with his daughter. His warmth and sense of humor will be sorely missed by those who knew him, and his family feels his loss most acutely.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare Hospice, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
Dr. Laird’s family will be holding a memorial service for him on Sunday, August 19th at 2pm at McEwen Funeral Home at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte. All are welcome.
