Dennis was born on January 31, 1945 to Margaret and Dennis Conroy in The Bronx, New York. The eldest of four children, Dennis was a wonderful brother to Robert (Bob), Margaret (Peggy) and Veronica (Ronnie). He completed his elementary education at St. Brendan’s and earned his diploma from Cardinal Hayes High School, where he was captain of the Varsity swimming team and anchored a record-setting medley relay team.
After graduating from high school, Dennis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was proud to serve from September 25, 1963 until his honorable discharge as Sargent on September 22, 1967. Dennis was a Vietnam War Veteran, during which he was a communications specialist and forward observer. Dennis’ identity as a Marine influenced much of his life, as evidenced by his unwavering patriotism.
Dennis received a bachelor’s degree in social science with honors from Iona College (now Iona University). He completed numerous business and leadership programs at noted institutions, including the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and the Aspen Institute for Leadership.
Dennis spent more than 40 years sharpening his business and leadership skills. He began his noteworthy profession in the communications industry and, soon after, found his niche in management consulting. Over the span of his career, Dennis held leadership positions with several well-known consultancies, including membership in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) North American Executive Leadership Team, and CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ West Business Unit. Before that, he served as vice president of Booz, Allen & Hamilton’s communications and technology practice, as well as managing partner of the National Information Communications Industry Practice at Coopers & Lybrand. After retiring from management consultancy (at PwC) in 2002, he served as a senior advisor at BearingPoint Inc. In 2005, he was appointed President and CEO of Computer Horizons Corporation (NASDAQ: CHRZ), which he saw through to its acquisition and liquidation.
Over the years, Dennis volunteered his time and expertise with numerous worthy civic, social service and church organizations. He was especially proud of his role as a board member for the Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in New York City. He was also dedicated to fundraising for his high school and was thrilled to be inducted into the Cardinal Hayes High School Hall of Fame in 2015.
In his free time, Dennis loved to spend time with his wife, read, play golf and cheer his grandsons on at various school and sports events. A longtime member of Westchester Country Club, he was a “Berrigan Boy,” one of about 50 senior golfers who enjoyed friendly games and competition. After relocating to North Carolina, he made fast friends with several members of the senior golf group at The Club at 12 Oaks in Holly Springs.
Dennis was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Gail Anne [Sheridan]. Their love story is one for the ages! The couple, who relocated to North Carolina from their longtime residence, Westchester, NY, in 2020, were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on November 30, 2024.
Dennis leaves behind two children, their spouses and four beautiful grandchildren. Bridget Anne [Edwards] and her husband, Andrew, reside with Patrick (14) and Kian (11) in North Carolina, while Devin and his wife, Teresa, reside with Aleena (4) and Olivia (1) in Florida.
Dennis was a kind, intelligent, thoughtful, athletic and compassionate man who never forgot his roots. He was a man entirely devoted to his family and friends, a respected giant in industry, a dedicated Catholic and generous with both his time and resources to help improve the lives of many. His monumental loss will be felt for a long time to come.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene in Apex, NC on Friday, July 26 at 11:00 am. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life at Bellini following the service. Additionally, a memorial Mass at Saint Sebastian Church in Woodside, Queens will be held on Monday, August 19 at 10:45 am. Internment at Calvary Cemetery and a second celebration of life will be held following the Mass.
