He was born on May 17, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland to Edward Norris Rich, Jr. and Charlotte Littlejohn Rich. He graduated from Gilman School in 1948 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1952. Bob served in the Maryland National Guard from 1947 to 1949 and was commissioned upon graduation from college as Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, serving from 1952 to 1954, including one year with the 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing in Korea. After his military service, he was an insurance producer with the Poor, Bowen, Bartlett & Kennedy agency and its successors for forty-seven years.
A life-long resident of the Annapolis area, Bob was a member of St. Margaret's Church, the Annapolis Yacht Club, and he was a former member of the Board of the Anne Arundel General Hospital, the Board of the Key School, the Tidewater Bank Advisory Board and the Adirondack League Club. He was devoted to his family and friends and was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. He played tennis for his college and for many years after. He raised and trained many excellent gun dogs. He was an enthusiastic amateur photographer, a dedicated reader and a prolific correspondent.
He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Leila Ramsdell Rich.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Joan Ellen Rich; his children, Rebecca Rich Wendler (Paul) of Maynard, MA, Robert L. Rich, Jr. (Debra) of Easton, MD and Homer R. Rich (Lisa) of Prince Frederick, MD, step-sons, Steven C. Jennings (Linda) and David A. Jennings; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Rich Cramer.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 19 at 2:00 PM at St. Margaret's Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Rd., Annapolis, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Survivors Offering Support at the Rebecca Fortney Breast Center of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake or St. Margaret's Church.
