Mariam (Mari) Sarit Carson came from West Africa and adapted quickly to American culture and language. She joined the Carson family 10 years ago bringing her spirited self with her. She had a passionate yet reasonable opinion on many social issues particularly regarding equality and justice. Her friends enjoyed her liveliness and welcomed her friendship that was forgiving and enduring. Kind, welcoming, big hearted, funny, smart, ambitious, loving, and free spirited are some of the terms friends have used to describe her.
Mariam was a 2013 graduate of Ann Arbor Skyline High School where she ran track and cross country, played in the marching band, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Mariam started her studies at University of Michigan as a Bridge student and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan as a Blavin Scholar and a Global Scholar. She double majored in International Studies and Spanish. A participant in the A2LP – Ann Arbor Languages Partnership – she was honing her teaching and leadership skills to enhance her impact in support of others. She loved working with her students at Pattengill.
Mariam was a graduate student at the University of Michigan School of Public Health at the time of her passing. Interested in health behavior and education, Mari focused her efforts on mental health and wellbeing, substance abuse, and violence prevention. This past summer, she participated in an internship in Valencia, Spain, working with refugees. Her dream was to return to Spain someday soon.
