John Davis Mayne, age 89, 1/14/1934 – 11/26/23 in Ann Arbor, MI. John was born in Churchville, New York. He graduated from the last class of Bergen High School in 1951, where he played basketball and baseball. He received a scholarship to attend the Rochester Business Institute, and he earned his certificate in 1953. In 1954, he moved to Ann Arbor and enrolled in the University of Michigan. While studying business, he was also the Senior Manager of the university’s men’s basketball team, which launched his life-long devotion to the Michigan Wolverines.
After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration, John began his career as an accountant in 1959. John married Beverly Pocock in 1964 and they were together for 52 years before she passed away in 2016. In addition to his passion for sports, John also loved to travel, and he extensively explored the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. These experiences led him to become the Director of Financial Affairs of Youth for Understanding, where he worked to create international friendships through student exchange programs. One exchange student in particular impacted John and Bev’s lives forever. Reni Roxas came from the Philippines in 1977 to spend the year and soon became like a daughter to them. Reni and her sons, Max and Sam Singer continued to a have a uniquely special family relationship with John and Bev.
John was beloved by family and friends who appreciated his ready wit, easy-going personality, and genuine sincerity. John is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Pocock Mayne, his parents, Arnold Jay Mayne and Corrine Davis Mayne, and sister, Maribel Mayne Hawkins. He is survived by his brothers, Richard Mayne and Thomas Mayne of upstate New York, ten nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 9 at 3:00 pm at Mt. Rest Cemetery, 76 South Lake Street, Bergen NY.
