Dr. Howard V. Dubin died peacefully, with dignity and surrounded by family, at The University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor on Sunday, October 16, following complications from Parkinson's Disease and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He was 73. Dr. Dubin married Patricia Tucker Dubin on June 10, 1962, which he often said was "the best decision (he) ever made." Mrs. Dubin was by his side at the time of his death. Dr. Dubin had four adored children, each with a spouse whom he loved as his own; Douglas Dubin and Contessa Fincher of Ann Arbor, Kathryn Dubin Flynn and Jim Flynn, of New Braunfels, TX, David Dubin and Heidi Gambino, of Newton, MA and Michael Dubin and Darla Dubin, also of Ann Arbor. He was blessed with 10 treasured grandchildren; Sam, Abby, Hannah, Cameron, Matthew, Alex, Olivia, Lauren, Theo and Finn, and one very spoiled Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charley. He was also a much beloved uncle to 13 nieces and nephews. Dr. Dubin was preceded in death by his parents, Meyer and Blanche Dubin, his sister, Rita Greenburg, and his brother in law, Gene Greenburg (whom Dr. Dubin often referred to as his true brother) all of New York. Dr. Dubin was educated at Columbia University in New York. After graduating from medical school, he completed two residencies and passed boards in both Internal Medicine and Dermatology, at Columbia University and The University of Michigan. Dr. Dubin joined the Department of Dermatology at The U of M in 1968. He served the Ann Arbor community for four decades, in private practice and as a clinical professor at the University of Michigan. He also served in the Army for two years during the 1960's, in South Carolina and Viet Nam. Among many volunteer positions, Dr. Dubin served as President of The Michigan Dermatological Society (1985-1987), President of the Board of Trustees at Greenhills School (1981-1984), and President of The Dermatology Foundation (1991-1998.) Upon stepping down from his position on The Dermatology Foundation Executive Board, he received the Distinguished Service Medallion from that organization, which is the "highest honor bestowed upon a colleague, in recognition of exemplary leadership and service to the specialty of Dermatology." Founded in 1964 and geared toward research support and advancements in patient care, The Dermatology Foundation has awarded this honor only to the founders and to two other distinguished recipients, one of whom was Dr. Dubin. Visiting hours will be from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 23, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, located at 403 South Fourth Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. A funeral service to honor Dr. Dubin's life will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, located at 1432 Washtenaw Ave., at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 24.
