Carolyn Lee Gilbertson, age 85, of Ypsilanti, Michigan passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022 at home with family surrounding her after many years of various illnesses. Carolyn was born in Annandale, Minnesota to Elmer and Gertrude Campbell. The family moved via train, (along with many World War II soldiers) to Michigan in December 1942. Carolyn attended Dexter Schools and worked many jobs in the Ann Arbor and Dexter area. The A&W in Ann Arbor (where she met her future husband Melvin), Krogers in Dexter and Paul Bunyan's, where she sewed a 30 foot Santa suit for the statue of Paul Bunyan. She was probably most famous for being the "Cake Lady". Carol made cakes of all kinds for so many special occasions. She also was the "Babysitting Grandma" for many years. She had a passion for gardening, baking, canning, sewing, quilting, crafting, bowling, camping and being with her friends and her beloved pets. One of her favorite past times was spending time with her family including hosting large gatherings at the family home in Dexter. Carol married Melvin Gilbertson on December 30th, 1954 and together they raised four wonderful children. Carol leaves behind to cherish her memory her children; Richard (Pam) Gilbertson, Pamela (Tony) Rinna, Suzanne Thompson and Linda (Steve) Woytaz, grandchildren; Lisa, Becky, Richard, Eric, Ben, Tristan and Chandler and 11 Great-grandchildren, siblings; Janice Pingston, Gil (Marge) Campbell, Joan Kubiak, Patricia (Richard) Yester. She was preceded in death by both Parents, Her husband Melvin and Son in law Darrell as well as her brothers Robert and Milton. Cremation has taken place. A service and memorial luncheon will take place in the Spring as per her wishes.
