Norm was born to Ida and Rhiner Honderd at their home in Story City, Iowa on a snowy night January 24, 1940. He graduated from Milford Township Consolidated School. After high school, he went on to attend the Iowa State Teachers College where he pursued one of his favorite hobbies, basketball. Norm married the love of his life, Frances, in 1960. They had 3 children: Dawn (1963), Diana (1965), and Brad (1969).
Norm owned and operated his own insurance companies “Mid-America” and “Mid-America Catastrophe” where he was affectionately referred to as “Stormin Norman”. Outside of his professional career, he was a true entrepreneur. A man who never stopped investing in his passions, he formed two other companies directly related to his hobbies: Proformer LLC and Life Story Enterprises.
Norm’s love of travel led him on numerous vacations with his bride of 62 years. He was also an avid golfer. Norm was such a smart man he convinced his wife to “winter” in Florida for the last 20 years to extend his golfing season. Joking aside, Florida was a huge part of his life where family and friends always had an open invitation to come to visit. Whether they came to visit him in Iowa or Florida – they could count on playing some sort of game since he loved them all. A man of many titles, Norm cherished being a son, brother, husband, father, friend, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He felt this made him the “richest man” in the world.
Norm will be deeply missed by his family. Those left to carry on his legacy and share their memories include his wife: Fran Honderd; sister: Rhoda Nerem; daughters: Dawn (Jay) Block, and Diana (Eric) Anderson; son: Brad (Jana) Honderd; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jacob) Harrison, Megan (Michael) Klein, Andrew (Makayla) Putz, Bryce (Lexi) Block, Jaymie Block, Tyler Anderson, Colin Honderd, Bella Anderson, Mason Honderd; great-grandchildren: Emmett and Jace Klein, Carter and Baylor Putz, Jaycee Harrison.
