Carmen Acevedo

A celebration of Carmen’s life will be held at a later date in Puerto Rico.

Carmen María Acevedo was born July 14, 1931 in Rincón, Puerto Rico to Pedro Acevedo and Maria Ventura. She grew up in Puerto Rico and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus. Carmen taught Introductory Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Zoology at the University of Puerto Rico for many years before coming to earn her Master’s Degree in Animal Behavior at Ohio State University. After this she returned to her island home to continue her teaching duties until she retired.

On December 25, 1953, in Rincón Carmen was united in marriage to Agustín Navarro. The couple was blessed with one son, Pedro Navarro.

Carmen had a great appreciation for nature and the beautiful gifts it has to offer. She also enjoyed composing folk songs, solving crossword puzzles, and loved all animals; including her beloved cats she raised. Most of all, her family held a special place in her heart.

Survivors include her son, Pedro Navarro and his wife Sol; grandchildren, Aurora, Esteban, and Gabriel Navarro; sister, Josefa Acevedo; and two nieces, Maria Eugenia Quinones and Ilia Quiñones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Agustin Navarro; parents, Pedro and Maria; sisters, Hipólita Acevedo and Geña Acevedo; and a niece, Ity Cardona.
