Gertrude “Abbie” Esther Himan, 92, died Sunday, March 29, 2020 at Israel Family Hospice House. A private graveside service will be held since gathering restrictions in place at this time due to our country’s current pandemic.
Abbie was born to George and Ida (Lauterbach) Abbas on July 31, 1927 in rural Geneva, IA.
Abbie started teaching in 1945 after obtaining her degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College. In 1964, she came to Ames and taught for four years at Crawford and Sawyer Elementary Schools. She met her future husband, Leland “Lee” Himan through Bill Ellett, the principal of Sawyer Elementary School. On September 6, 1964, she married Lee and became parents to two children, Mark and Sara. After the two children entered junior high school, Abbie re-entered the workforce in several retail positions in Ames.
She is proceeded in death by her parents; brother, Bud, sisters Arlene, Lena, Norma; and husband, Leland Himan on April 18, 2016.
She is survived by her children, Mark (Gina) and Sara (Mark); grandchildren, Anna (Austin) Thompson, Lauren (Jesslyn) Coghlan and Logan, Paige, and Erin Bathie.
