Andrew Hook Ward, age 70, passed away on July 2, 2024. A memorial service will be held on July 27 at 10 am at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames. A visitation will be held July 26 at Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
Andrew Ward was born on January 25, 1954 in Norfolk, Virginia to John and Barbara (Hook) Ward. When he was a child, his family moved to Des Moines, and then later to Ames.
As a child, Andrew was specially selected to attend a prestigious art class at the Des Moines art center. He graduated Ames High School in 1972. He then earned his Bachelor’s in Industrial Technological degree from Iowa State University and later his Master’s in Educational Administration from University of Northern Iowa.
Andrew met the love of his life, Joni, at University of Northern Iowa. They were married June 5th, 1976. They had 2 children, Megan and Ryan.
He served in education for 40 years, most recently as the Middle School Principal at Colo Nesco Community School.
Andy was a skilled carpenter especially in finish work. He loved all forms of art and enjoyed painting. He was an avid outdoorsman, being both a hunter and a fisherman.
Being a hearty Irishman, Andrew had several favorite sayings:
“All glory comes from daring to begin.”
“Every day above ground is a good one.”
And his personal favorite:
“Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed frequently.”
He always ended his school announcement of the day with, “Don’t forget to tell your family you love them”
Andrew is survived by his wife, Joni; children Megan Peterson and Ryan Ward; brother Stephen (Sandi) Ward; grandchildren Kael Peterson and Elroy Peterson; 1 niece and 3 nephews, 1 grandniece and 1 grandnephew. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Pryor Ward.
