Raymond went to be with our Lord on Aug. 22, 2013. He was born May 17, 1922, in Alton, Mo., to Green Berry and Pernecia Ora Custer. As a child, he worked on the family farm.
After high school, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC. He served in the Navy during World War II, where he attended electrical school and became a master electrician. He worked on various government projects until he was called into the ministry. He attended Bible Baptist College in Springfield, Mo.
After graduating from the seminary, he and his family moved to Las Vegas, where he started Gateway Baptist Church. He served as associate pastor at Cielo Vista Baptist Church in El Paso before being called to pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Canyon. He simultaneously worked as an electrician at West Texas A&M University.
Ray left the ministry, received a master’s degree and taught electrical trades at Caprock High School, where he retired in 1987. He started Wild Horse Mesa Community Church in San Luis, Colo. He taught senior Sunday school at Arden Road Baptist Church and entertained the church members with barbecues at his home on numerous occasions.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers and sisters; and his first wife, Phyllis Custer.
Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, LaVerne; his children, Anita and husband Kerry, Tony and wife Verna, Mike and wife Grace and Phil and wife Danielle; 12
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice Program or Arden Road Baptist Church Mission Ministry.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Arden Road Baptist Church.
