The family moved to Amarillo in 1941, where O B found work at Pantex. Melva grew up in Amarillo and graduated from the first class of Palo Duro High School in 1956.
Melva entered the nursing program at Northwest Texas School of Nursing in Amarillo, graduating in 1959. In 1986, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Texas State University in Canyon. She later earned her CCRN certification while working at St. Antony’s Hospital. Melva worked as a nurse for more than 40 years specializing in the SICU where she cared for the most critical patients.
She married James Needham, a police officer in Amarillo, in 1961 and had three daughters. Melva was a devoted member of the Church of Christ. Her most fond memories included her and her mother playing the piano while singing church hymns and enjoying fun stories of how simple life used to be growing up. She enjoyed visitation of shut-ins, Bible studies, and song practice at church. Other favorite activities included crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and crafting with her grandchildren. She was also known to have a sweet tooth!
Survivors include her brother Royce and wife Tracy of Fate, three children, Donna Fulton and husband J. of Canyon, Cindy Mapes and husband Eric of San Antonio, Katherine Jennings of Amarillo, and five grandchildren, Ryan Fulton, Kendyl Mapes, Parker Mapes, Elizabeth Jennings and Matthew Jennings.
Viewing to be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, November 12 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The funeral service is Saturday, November 13 at Golden Plains Church of Christ, 2:00 pm. Graveside service following.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to North Amarillo Church of Christ or High Plains Children’s Home in Amarillo.
