Larry will lie in state on Monday, June 29, 2020 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St in Amarillo. A celebration of Larry's life will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 in the funeral homes Pioneer Chapel. Burial will follow Tuesday afternoon in Darrouzett Cemetery in Darrouzett, Texas. Larry was born October 13, 1939 in Canadian, Texas to Merle S. and Velma Fisher Cross. Larry grew up in the small community of Darrouzett, TX and graduated from Darrouzett High School in 1958. He attended West Texas State University, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry, through the ROTC program at WT. After attending Infantry Officer’s Basic Course, in Fort Benning, GA, he served a tour of duty in Korea and retired with the rank of Captain.
Larry married his best friend, Dolores Duke on March 9, 1962, in Darrouzett. They were constant companions for 58 years. After serving in the military, they settled in Amarillo where Larry pursued his career in accounting. In 1969, Larry and Dolores moved to Pampa, Texas where he was the Senior Accountant and Office Services Manager for the engineering division of Cabot Corporation. While in Pampa, Larry served as County Vice Chairman, Precinct Chairman, and delegate to the Texas State Republican Party Convention. He was active in the Pampa Chamber of Commerce, serving as a member of the Legislative Affairs Committee, and as a member of the Free Enterprise Committee. Larry also served as a member of the Gray County Appraisal Review Board.
Larry was an accomplished amateur photographer. His hobby led to his being a member of the Advisory Council to the Photography Explorers Post for the Boy Scouts of America. He was also the photo editor for “Focus Magazine”, published in Pampa. His photos appeared often in the Pampa News Sports and Personal Interest sections.
Larry was a member of HiLand Christian Church, in Pampa, where he served as Chairman of the Board, Elder, Treasurer, and Sunday School
Teacher. In Amarillo, he served as Elder, Treasurer, and Board Member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church. He was Chairman of Missions Committee at both churches. Larry and Dolores are currently members of The Colonies Church of Christ in Amarillo and attend Global Outreach Community Church in Houston.
Larry and Dolores’ generous spirit support many local charities including The Salvation Army, City Church, and Sharing Hope, among many others.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marilyn Maynard of Canyon. Survivors include his wife Dolores, two children Barbara and husband Rick German of Kingwood, TX, Mary and husband Jon Barton of Driftwood, TX; grandchildren Cory Bigham of Houston, Bre and husband Trent Homer of McAlester, OK, Branson and wife Sarah Thomas of Maple Lake, MN, and Christopher and wife Morgan Barton of Driftwood, TX; six great grandchildren Logan, Landon, Shane, Seth, Brinley, and Oliver; brother Stephen Cross and wife Suellen of Amarillo, and brother-in-law Ken Maynard of Canyon; nieces Wendy and husband Louis Shaheen, Michelle and husband Dan Dear; nephews Scott and wife Shannon Maynard, and Mark Cross.
