Joe C. Detten was born on December 23, 1940 in Amarillo, Texas to Robert and Eulalia Detten and went home to be with our Lord on the evening of his 79th birthday, December 23, 2019. He died exactly as he would’ve wanted, surrounded by his loving family and their prayers. He was the greatest daddy, papa and friend anyone could have asked for and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joe’s faith was deeply important to him; most often sharing it by his quiet, steadfast example. He had a heart of gold and a true gift for hospitality, making new friends and old feel welcomed in his presence. He was a kind, patient, strong, and hardworking man who was quick with a smile and he took great pleasure in sharing a laugh or two. His family’s legacy of farming well suited his fondness for the outdoors.
He loved his family more than words could possibly say. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren who will forever treasure his great love, big hugs, and gentle spirit. Joe especially enjoyed trips with his family to the mountains and passing on stories from one generation to another. One of his greatest dreams was fulfilled several years ago when he visited the area where his family originated in Germany.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty; and four brothers, Bob, Tom, John Joseph, and Ray.
He is survived by his loving children: Debbie Huff and husband Tadd; Jody Detten and wife Debbie; Becky Castillo and husband Art; Lisa Seth and husband Chris; Susie Frame and husband Steve; and Aimee Fields and husband Jeff. A brother Richard Detten and wife Mary, along with eighteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many loving family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bishop DeFalco Retreat Center in Amarillo or Catholic Family Services. The family would especially like to thank everyone for their kind support during Joe’s last months of illness.
