Emily Geeting Hinson

Emily Geeting Hinson, 92, of Lakewood Ranch, formerly of Maitland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 22, 2020. Emily was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Hinson, Jr. and her parents Roy and Veva Geeting. She is survived by daughters Glenda (Bill) Ekasala, Jennifer (Tony) Mirenda, and her son Jim (Tracy) Hinson. She also leaves behind five grandchildren to cherish her memory: Evan Ekasala, Angeline Mirenda, Jenna Hinson Corley, Philip Mirenda, and Andrew Hinson.

Emily was the daughter of two teachers, who often taught at the college level. Growing up during the Depression, she and her family moved frequently as her father, an economics professor, took positions at various universities filling in for absent professors. They eventually moved to Fort Myers, where her parents were both involved in university teaching. She attended Florida State College for Women, and became a home economics teacher upon graduation. She met Jim on a blind date, when the University of Florida men met with Florida State women at college social events. They were introduced by Jim’s hometown friend from Clermont, who was Emily’s roommate. It was truly “love at first sight”, and they dated exclusively until her graduation in 1949, when they got married. Both were teachers and they took their first jobs in Groveland, then moved to Orlando where they taught at the local schools.

Her parents helped take care of their grandchildren during the day. Emily began to teach elementary school and went back to get a Masters Degree from Nova University in Elementary Education. She was an adept seamstress and made many of her own clothes and clothes for her children. She taught her daughters to sew and to cook. She and Jim passed along life skills to their three children, both academic and practical. They also passed along their love of reading, family and humor.

She was a kind, generous mother, who loved her children and most of all her beloved husband. She was a member of the Asbury United Church in Maitland and was especially active after her husband’s death in 2002. In 2014 she moved to Lakewood Ranch to live with her daughter Glenda and her husband, Bill. She will be remembered for her sweet, kind, forgiving nature, and her faith in God.

The family will receive friends for visitation at noon until 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home at 994 E. Altamonte Drive, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Highland Memory Gardens.
