William F Schrantz MD

Dr. William F. Schrantz, 66, of Alexandria, VA, Martinsburg, WV, and Erie, PA, passed Sunday, May 13th, 2012 in Alexandria, VA. Dr. Schrantz was born November 8th, 1945 in Quakertown, PA, to William M.H. Schrantz and Frances M. Schrantz. A memorial service will be held May 29th, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Marine Memorial Chapel, 3251 Embry Loop, Quantico, VA 22134 aboard the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA. The family will begin accepting visitors at the Chapel at 1:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service at The Clubs at Quantico. Dr. Schrantz attended Siena College in Albany, NY (1963-1966) and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA (1966-1970). Dr. Schrantz served 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy with tours at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, the Flight School in Pensacola, FL, and as a Flight Surgeon for Marine Corps Air Groups 26 and 29 in New River, NC. He completed his residency in General Surgery and Orthopedics at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD, where he would later serve multiple tours as the Director of their Pediatric Orthopedic Service. During a break in his active duty service, Dr. Schrantz was in private practice as an Orthopedist in Martinsburg, WV for nine years (1981-1990) where he also served as the Chief of Surgery for City Hospital (1982-1984) and was a Chairperson for the City Hospital Pain Clinic (1985-1990). In 1991, Dr. Schrantz was recalled to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and served on active duty until 1999 when he retired from the Navy as a Captain. He spent the next six years (1999-2005) as an Orthopedic Surgeon for the West Penn Orthopedics, Inc, in Clarion, PA. Since 2007, Dr. Schrantz worked as an Orthopedist for the Shiners Hospitals for Children in both Philadelphia and Erie, PA. Dr. Schrantz served as an Orthopedic Consultant for overseas missions to Vieux Fort in St. Lucia, Puerto Barrios Hospital in Guatemala, and Karon in Kenya. Dr. Schrantz is survived by his mother Frances, wife Gail, sons Andrew and Joe, daughter Sveta, two daughters-in-law Heather and Jennifer, five grandchildren Andy, Brendon, Danny, Grayson, and Haley Mae, sisters Rosemary, Kathi, and Patti, brother Kenny, and numerous nieces and nephews.
