Rita was born in Dannemora, New York to James Carew and Elizabeth Mullally. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to Washington D.C. There, she began a career in the Federal Government, the bulk of which was in the Department of Education where she eventually served as a Program Analyst. It was during the early stage of her career that she gave birth to her three sons - Tom, Jim and Greg. As a single parent, she raised them with equal measures of sacrifice, love and devotion. After a lengthy career, she retired from the D.O.E. She next found purpose and fulfillment becoming a Metropolitan Tour Guide. For 20 years, she took pride in heralding the beauty and history of her adopted hometown. When this stage was completed, she became an active volunteer at Mt. Vernon Hospital and Rehab facility. She derived great satisfaction from assisting the staff and interacting with the patients.
Rita was a long time parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. It was her strong catholic faith that sustained her in times of crisis.
Rita resided at Montebello Condominiums in Alexandria for the last 35 years of her life. The relationships that she formed there would serve as her second family. They provided a sense of community as well as a loyal group of loving friends. She would vacation with them both here and abroad. She enjoyed many years with the Montebello Bridge Clubs. Likewise, she enjoyed attending the artistic performances that were offered.
Rita was preceded in death by her son Gregory. She is survived by sons Jim (Mary of Columbus, Ohio) and Tom of Omaha, Nebraska and his three sons – Tom, Jim, and Patrick, as well as numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
